JERUSALEM: Israeli fighter jets conducted airstrikes on targets described as “terror infrastructure” inside Syria in retaliation for cross-border fire directed at the Golan Heights, according to a statement from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

The military action comes in response to an incident on Saturday when two projectiles fired from Syria landed in uninhabited areas of the Golan Heights, triggering rocket alert sirens in the region.

In its statement on Telegram, the IDF announced, “A short while ago, in response to the attack toward the Golan Heights yesterday (Saturday), IDF fighter jets struck terror infrastructure sites in Syria.” This marks the second instance of Israeli strikes in Syria within a short span, as on the previous Friday, Israel targeted Syrian locations following a drone launch from Syria that crashed into a school in the southern town of Eilat.

The Golan Heights, occupied by Israel since the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed (a move not recognized by the United Nations), has been a region of heightened tensions and occasional cross-border incidents. The latest exchange of fire underscores the volatility in the area, with Israel maintaining a proactive stance in response to perceived threats.

Cross-border exchanges of fire have also been a regular occurrence along the frontier with Lebanon, as Israel continues its military offensive against Hamas. The situation remains fluid, with regional dynamics influencing the complex geopolitical landscape.
