GENEVA, Switzerland: More than 38,000 women and girls were killed by Israel during the Gaza genocide at the end of 2025, according to estimates released by the UN Women on Friday.
The figures account for over half of the 71,000 deaths recorded by Gaza’s health ministry, reflecting a significant impact on female civilians during the prolonged hostilities.
“Between October 2023 and December 2025, more than 38,000 women and girls were killed in Gaza — the result of Israeli air bombardment and land military operations,” UN Women spokesperson Sofia Calltorp told a press briefing in Geneva.
“This includes over 22,000 women and 16,000 girls, amounting to an average of at least 47 women and girls killed every day.”
The agency noted that the actual toll could be higher, as many victims remain buried under debris and reporting systems continue to face major disruptions. It also pointed out that women and girls accounted for a far larger share of deaths compared to previous conflicts in Gaza.
Rising humanitarian concerns
According to the report, those who survived are facing severe challenges, including repeated displacement, food shortages, and limited access to essential services.
“On top of a staggering death toll, nearly 11,000 women and girls in Gaza have sustained injuries so devastating that they survive only with lifelong disabilities,” Calltorp said.
The conflict has also altered family structures, with many households now led by women who must support their families with limited resources.
Nearly one million women and girls have been displaced multiple times, while hundreds of thousands are experiencing acute food insecurity, the report added.
Despite a ceasefire announced in October 2025, the situation remains fragile, with continued risks to civilians, particularly women and girls.
