UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has called for the developing nations to seek execution of the pledges made in Sunday’s UN Pact for the Future, which is aimed at transforming the multilateral system, noting that it has balked at even some of the promises made to them in other reform accords.

Ambassador Munir Akram, permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN said that undoubtedly, the pact they have adopted is not perfect.

The Ambassador said that they are many provisions in which they have stepped back from the obligations which were made in the SDG political declaration. However, he added, the transformation, which the developing nations were seeking, will only be obtained through implementation.

He also called the Pact’s provisions on trade as unsatisfactory.  He maintained that trade must become, once again, an engine of growth as well as development. He added that they must resist the new environmental protectionism, expand preferential treatment for developing nations, and pursue a robust revival of the WTO dispute settlement system.
