Islamabad Receives 193mm of Rain as Pakistan Met Office Issues Flash Flood Alert

ISLAMABAD: Heavy monsoon rains continued intermittently across various parts of Pakistan as the Met Department said Thursday morning that so far, 193mm of rainfall has been recorded in Islamabad.

The PMD said that Rawalpindi has received 179mm of rainfall while 167mm has been recorded in Mandi Bahauddin.

It added that Chakwal has received 142mm, Jhelum 81mm, Mangla 63mm, Okara 46mm, Hafizabad 44mm and Murree 41mm during last 24 hours.


The PMD said that in Kashmir, 57mm rainfall has been recorded in Kotli while 48mm in Rawalakot.

“Exceptionally high flood”

Earlier, PMD on Wednesday warned of “exceptionally high flood” in River Jhelum at Mangla in the next 24 hours, producing 350,000- to 450,000-cusec stream and urged “all concerned to remain alert”.

On Wednesday, PMD predicted widespread rain-wind/thundershowers across several parts of the country on Thursday (today), warning that heavy to very heavy rainfall may lead to flash floods, landslides, and urban flooding in vulnerable areas.

Radio Pakistan reported that at least 33 people lost their lives and over 170 others sustained injuries in various rain-related incidents across Punjab during the past 24 hours.

Radio Pakistan cited a Rescue 1122 spokesperson as saying that the worst-hit cities include Lahore with thirteen fatalities, Faisalabad eight, Pakpattan four, Sheikhupura and Okara three each and one each in Nankana Sahib and Sahiwal.

Rescue teams continued operations amid ongoing unstable conditions, urging the public to take precautionary measures.

According to the latest update of PMD, Islamabad received 92 mm rainfall from 02 am to 5am while 102 mm rainfall has been recorded in Rawalpindi in the same period.

Evacuation orders

It said that Chakwal has received 16mm, Jhelum 11mm, Mangla 03mm, and Murree 8 mm from 02 am to 5 am on Thursday.

The PMD said that the water level has risen by 21 feet at Nullah Leh in Rawalpindi while evacuation orders have been issued for people living near the nullah.

The PMD has advised the people to cooperate with the local administration in order to shift them to safer places.
