ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad police Thursday announced forming the “Minority Protection Unit” with an initial strength of 70 policemen, for the “protection of minority places of worship”.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Islamabad police announced, “Seventy jawans (policemen) have been posted in the ‘Minority Protection Unit’.”

The initiative, according to Islamabad police, was taken in response to the growing need for protecting minority groups’ rights and interests. With the implementation of this fresh development, all DPOs now have the essential duty of managing the safety of communities and places of worship within their constituencies.

Operations for the Minority Protection Unit will be overseen directly by the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in charge of operations in Islamabad.

Notably, the Minority Protection Unit was created using young recruits from the most recent Islamabad police recruiting drive, demonstrating a proactive attitude to injecting new life and ideas into security activities.

As a result of the National Minorities Commission’s recommendations, which emphasized the urgent need for targeted actions to secure the protection and well-being of minority communities, the Minority Protection Unit was established. —APP
