ISLAMABAD: The two-member bench of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) today dismissed the Intra Court Appeal regarding the decision of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to postpone the elections of Islamabad.
IHC said in its ruling that the decision to confirm the number of Union Councils is the right of the Federal Government, and to make the constituencies according to the Union Councils is the duty of ECP.

IHC Further said in its decision that the Parliament has made amendments to the local government law and sent it to the President of Pakistan; so, the ruling of IHC in this regard is evident, IHC added.
Background of local government elections
Earlier the ECP announced holding the local government elections of Islamabad on 31 December 2022.
After that, the Federal government of Pakistan passed the law and issued a notification regarding the postponement of local government elections due to the plan to extend the number of the union councils of Islamabad.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) has moved to the IHC on this act of the Federal Government.
IHC single bench has ordered the ECP to take onboard all stakeholders and then issue the decision to hold local bodies elections.
On the directives of IHC, ECP postponed the schedule of local government elections.
