Islamabad, Beijing Pledge to Deepen Strategic Cooperation

ISLAMABAD: China and Pakistan have reaffirmed their resolve to deepen strategic cooperation in key areas including investment, economy, and regional connectivity. The made the resolve during a meeting between Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Islamabad on Tuesday, Radio Pakistan reported.

They emphasized the need for speeding up the implementation of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project.  In his remarks, President Zardari has said that friendship with China is an important part of Pakistan’s foreign policy.  The President said that there is more scope to expand ties between Pakistan and China.

He stressed the need for increasing connectivity through all-weather roads to strengthen public and commercial connectivity. President Zardari said that Chinese firms should invest in Pakistan Stock Exchange. He added time has come to take full advantage of China’s economic growth with the support of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and Gwadar Port.

President Zardari said that he will visit Beijing in November and that he is looking forward to the talks to reconnect with old friends and strengthen relationship. Asif Ali Zardari has recognized that Islamabad has always had the unwavering support from Beijing on main matters of mutual importance.

Expressing his heartfelt condolences on the death of two Chinese citizens in a terror assault, President Zardari said enemies of Pak-China friendship are trying to spoil bilateral ties by targeting Chinese citizens.

He said the enemy will not succeed in evil designs and also expressed Pakistan’s determination to give exemplary punishment to the criminals. President Asif Ali Zardari said that all necessary measures will be taken to further enhance security of Chinese citizens in Pakistan. President Zardari thanked Beijing for supporting Pakistan on Jammu and Kashmir issue.

On his part, the Chinese Premier said China will continue to support Pakistan’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and prosperity. The Premier said that Pakistan and China are good brothers, partners, neighbours, and friends. He added that this strategic cooperation will continue to deepen under the leadership of Chinese President Xi Jinping. He acknowledged President Zardari’s services in promoting Pakistan-China ties.

The Chinese PM also noted that the two nations have continued to support each other regardless of international challenges, and that they will continue to cooperate to take their partnership to new heights.

Li Qiang also emphasized the need for accelerating the progress of development projects under the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). He further said that China will continue to support Chinese companies to invest in Pakistan.

The Chinese Premier lauded Pakistan for its One China policy and its strong support for Beijing on all core issues including Tibet, Taiwan, Xinjiang, Hong Kong, and South China Sea.
