ISLAMABAD: As many as 12 people were killed when the 100-foot long and 11-foot-high wall of an under-construction bridge came crashing down on the labourers near Golra Mor, Peshawar Road here on Wednesday morning, according to local police.
The initial reports said that the labourers had set up a tent housing near the will at the construction site.
In total 13 individuals reportedly lost their lives in two separate incidents in Islamabad Wednesday as heavy monsoon downpour battered the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
The twin cities continue to be battered by torrential rains as the monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea gained strength, as predicted by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). Rawalpindi witnessed the highest rainfall, with nearly 200 millimetres recorded, according to local media.
According to the police, the lives of 12 people were abruptly cut short when the wall of an under-construction bridge catastrophically crumbled near Golra Mor, Peshawar Road in Islamabad.
Upon receiving the report, rescue teams from Rescue 1122 swiftly arrived at the scene of the incident. Employing machinery, the rescue workers diligently extricated bodies from the debris of the collapsed wall. The ongoing search aims to locate any additional individuals who may be trapped under the rubble, with four survivors rescued so far.
Tragically, in a separate incident attributed to a wall collapse in Mohammadi Town within the jurisdiction of Khana Police Station of Islamabad, an 11-year-old girl lost her life.
Furthermore, amidst the inclement weather, two buses travelling along the Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway collided with each other after losing control on the slippery road due to heavy rainfall. Several individuals sustained injuries in the incident. The teams of Rescue 1122 are actively engaged in providing assistance to the wounded while those severely injured are being transported to hospitals in Wah Cantt and Taxila.
