PESHAWAR: Renowned Islamic cleric, Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai has said that forbidding women from getting an education on the excuse of a ‘veil’ was against the teachings of Islam and the Holy Quran.

In a statement issued here on Friday, Popalzai said that the act of seeking knowledge and learning is obligatory for every Muslim (both men and women) in Islam as the religion guarantees and pledges the right to education for all, without gender prejudice or discrimination.

Mufti Pupalzai further said that the philosophy and practice of banning women from going out of the house may be a tradition and custom of a particular region, but it has nothing to do with Islam as the religion has not established any discrepancy between the two genders for obligatory knowledge.

Education for Women

He said that acquisition of knowledge and learning is a mandatory duty and this has been clearly mentioned and supported by the Holy Quran as well as the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), adding that there is consensus among all schools of thought in the religion Islam that the denial of an obligatory duty is disbelief.

Mufti Popalzai pinpointed that those who think female education to be a forbidden act, are actually denying a religious obligation, which is a great sin.
