Ishaq Dar Reaffirms Resolve to Commonwealth Partnership

ISLAMABAD:  Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has reaffirmed his country steadfast resolve to its partnership with the Commonwealth.

Addressing a press conference along with Commonwealth Secretary General Patricia Scotland in Islamabad on Monday, the Deputy Prime Minister said Islamabad attaches great significance to the commonwealth and its institutions, adding it is an important platform for forging consensus and developing partnerships in the face of unparalleled international challenges.

Dar stated that the Commonwealth should call for the addressing of outstanding issues among member nations with greater urgency and press for the respect of global law and implementation of UNSC resolutions.

He said Pakistan’s vision of regional connectivity and trade matches with the connectivity agenda of the Commonwealth. Ishaq Dar said Islamabad sees vast opportunities for cooperation with the Commonwealth in realizing development objectives especially in education, skill development, youth and women empowerment, health and environment.

The Foreign Minister said Islamabad supports the commonwealth goal of increasing intra Commonwealth trade to around two trillion dollars by 2030. He stated this will not only provide job opportunities to the new generation but also create conditions for win-win cooperation amongst the member nations.

Dar said said Pakistan will work with the Commonwealth in developing resilience against the challenge of climate change.

Speaking on the occasion, the Commonwealth Secretary General was thankful of the resilience and determination exhibited by Pakistan in the wake of 2022 deadly floods. She further said the commonwealth stood in solidarity with the people of Pakistan during those tough times.
