MIAMI: Conor McGregor, Irish mixed martial arts superstar, has been accused of sexually assaulting a woman at an NBA Finals in Miami last week, US media reports said Thursday.
TMZ Sports and ESPN cited letters from the woman’s lawyer which said McGregor “violently” assaulted her in a bathroom at the Kaseya Center during the Miami Heat’s game four defeat to Denver on Friday. The 34-year-old Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) star is alleged to have “aggressively kissed” his accuser before attempting to force her into multiple sex acts.
McGregor’s attorney Barbara Llanes denied the allegations in a statement emailed to AFP. The lawyer representing McGregor said: The allegations are wrong. McGregor will not be intimidated. The City of Miami Police said an investigation had been opened.
In a statement, UFC said it was aware of the allegations and was gathering further information. The female lawyer, Ariel Mitchell, said her client had been watching game four of the NBA Finals on Friday, June 9, before the alleged incident happened.
In the legal letter to McGregor, Mitchell alleged that security guards forced the woman into a men’s bathroom before being violently sexually assaulted by McGregor.
The letter claimed the woman could free herself from the bathroom but left behind her purse, which she is said to have retrieved after pleading with security guards.
Mitchell, in an interview, said she had obtained video footage showing part of the alleged incident.
A police department said this is a complete open investigation, so no additional details could be released then.
