SULAIMANIYA: The semi-autonomous Kurdistan region in northern Iraq will hold parliamentary and presidential elections on November 18, according to a decree issued by Iraqi Kurdistan President Nechirvan Barzani.

KRG spokesman Dilshad Shahab made the announcement on Sunday during a news conference.

The elections will be held to elect representatives for the Kurdish regions, which gained self-rule in 1991. The polls will be a significant event in the region as they will determine the future direction of the semi-autonomous region in Iraq.

Economic status of Kurdistan region

The Kurdistan region has been a haven of stability and economic growth in Iraq, despite the country’s ongoing conflict with the Islamic State group and other militant groups.

The region has its own security forces, borders, and government institutions but still relies on the central government in Baghdad for financial assistance.

The upcoming elections will be watched closely by the international community, which has been supportive of the Kurdish region’s self-rule and its efforts to combat terrorism.

The elections will also be a test of the democratic process in Iraq and the ability of the Kurdistan region to maintain its autonomy and stability in a volatile region.
