BAGHDAD: Hours before Iraq has filed a complaint against Iran to the United Nations Security Council, the Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein has strongly condemned Iran’s attack on Irbil, considering the escalation “an attempt by Tehran to export its domestic problems.”

According to Arab News, Iraqi Foreign Minister expressed these remarks on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) held in Davos. He said that Iraq has taken political and diplomatic steps to respond to the Iranian offensive that killed 4 civilians in Irbil on Monday,” rejecting Tehran’s claims regarding the presence of the Israeli Mossad in his country.

Fouad Hussein also linked the offensive on the Iraqi Kurdistan region to the rising tensions between Tel Aviv and Tehran due to the crisis in Gaza.

Regarding Iraq’s interest in the withdrawal of US troops stationed in Iraqi military bases, Hussein added that Baghdad seeks to reach a “negotiation process” with the US, highlighting that “the US is ready to sit at the table but under normal conditions.”

The last few weeks witnessed an escalation against US forces in Iraq. The US responded by targeting the headquarters of Iraqi factions with close relations to Iran.
