BAGHDAD: Iraq’s top Shi’ite cleric Ayatollah Ali Sistani has called on the world to stand up against the terrible brutality by Israelis against Palestinians in Gaza and prevent further misery of the innocent Palestinian people, Western media reported on Wednesday.
Sistani in a statement said that ending the occupation of the usurped lands, is the only way to achieve peace and security in this region adding that Palestinians must be given their legitimate rights.
He said the resistance will continue against aggressors and the violence will continue to claim more innocent lives.
The conflict, which has escalated dramatically in recent days, has led to a devastating loss of life, with more than 1,100 innocent Palestinian civilians martyred and countless others wounded because of the persistent Israeli military airstrikes on the Gaza Strip.
Israel in its air strikes on Gaza has razed entire districts and has put Gaza under total siege to stop food and fuel reaching the area inhabited by 2.3 million people, many poor and dependent on aid.
Hamas media said on Wednesday that electricity had been cut in the area after the only power station stopped working.
