BAGHDAD: Hundred Iraqi Kurds have held protest against repeated “Turkish army bombardments” of their area, two days following an attack near the airport, Western media reported on Sunday.
Shelling on Airport
The shelling on Friday caused a blast near the airport wall in the presence of the commander of the Kurdish-led and US-allied Syrian Democratic Forces in the area. The US Defense department said that the US forces were also in the region but there were no death or casualties.
About 400 people took part in the protest demonstration in the centre of Sulaimaniyah, the 2nd largest city in autonomous Kurdistan region in Iraq.
Turkish army has long maintained positions inside northern Iraq, where it regularly conducts operations against Turkish Kurdish elements from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party known as (PKK).
The PKK, which Turkey and its Western partners classify as a “terrorist” group, operates bases in northern part of Iraq.
A source at the Turkish ministry of defense denied any role by its military in the shelling of Sulaimaniyah airport.
Iraqi President on Saturday condemned the bombardment against airport in the region.
