ISLAMABAD/BEIRUT: At least two soldiers were killed and three others injured in an explosion in Iraq’s northern Makhmour district.

According to an Iraqi state news agency, the soldiers were travelling in an army vehicle in the Makhmour district when an explosive detonated. No militant group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. The explosion is the latest in a string of similar incidents that have occurred across the country in recent days.

Three were Injured in a previous attack

On Monday, according to the Associated Press, eight people were killed and three wounded in the attack by an unknown person in the small village of Albu Bali northwest of Fallujah, previously held by the Islamic State militant group.

On Sunday, a bomb device went off in the north of Iraq, killing at least nine members of the federal police of Iraq who were on patrol in the small village of Ali Al-Sultan in the province of Kirkuk.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has convened a meeting of security authorities to discuss the militants’ attacks and the army’s plans to respond, according to an official statement on Wednesday. Iraqi authority declared victory over the Islamic State militant group five years ago, but the militant group has continued sporadic attacks amid fears of a resurgence.
