LONDON: Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani on Thursday said Iraq and Spain have been discussing a possible military cooperation agreement.
He made the remarks after a meeting with Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles in Baghdad.
He told media that he discussed such an agreement with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez when the Spanish leader visited Baghdad in December.
Al-Sudani said that Spain plays a vital role in NATO’s mission in Iraq, but reiterated his government’s intention to end the activities of international coalition forces in the country when the counterterrorism abilities of local security forces are sufficiently developed to tackle threats, particularly those posed by Daesh remnants.
Al-Sudani also lauded Spain for its stance on the war t between Hamas and Israel in Gaza and its support for efforts to prevent the genocide of Palestinians.
Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles said her country is committed to cooperate with Iraq and continue to support for the Iraqi Defense Ministry.
Currently, 367 Spanish soldiers are stationed in Iraq as part of NATO forces there and the international coalition against Daesh.
