TEHRAN: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is scheduled to visit Russia next month to attend the BRICS summit, where he will hold talks with President Vladimir Putin, a government spokeswoman said Tuesday. This will be Pezeshkian’s first trip to Russia since assuming office in late July.
According to Iranian government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani, Pezeshkian will participate in the BRICS summit, set to take place from October 22 to 24 in the Volga valley city of Kazan. The BRICS grouping, originally comprised of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has recently expanded to include several Middle Eastern nations, including Iran.
Mohajerani confirmed that Pezeshkian’s agenda will include bilateral meetings with Putin, during which they are expected to discuss various aspects of their countries’ relationship. She noted that a “strategic partnership agreement” between Iran and Russia is nearing completion.
The relationship between Iran and Russia has strengthened significantly in recent years, particularly as both nations face extensive Western sanctions. The two governments have collaborated closely across multiple sectors, including military cooperation.
Recent sanctions targeting Iran’s air transport sector have been imposed due to allegations that Iran supplied ballistic missiles to Russia for use in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Iran has denied these allegations, labeling the sanctions as a “failed tool” of Western policy.
