TEHRAN: Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei has convened an emergency meeting of the country’s Supreme National Security Council in response to Israel’s strike on Hezbollah’s headquarters in Lebanon, Iranian media reported.
The meeting comes amid conflicting reports about the fate of Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah, after the Israeli military’s strike on the group’s main base in the southern suburbs of Beirut.
Reuters news agency cited sources as saying that Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah was unreachable following Israel’s attacks on Beirut on Friday evening. However, Iranian media reported that Hassan Nasrallah is “alive.”
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also denounced Israel’s attacks on Hezbollah’s headquarters in Lebanon. “The strikes perpetrated … by the Zionist regime in Beirut constitute a flagrant war crime that has exposed once again the nature of this regime’s state terrorism,” Iranian President said in a statement carried by the official IRNA news agency early Saturday.

Earlier on Friday, the Israeli army launched strikes on Hezbollah’s main headquarters, which was reportedly located beneath residential compounds in the heart of Beirut’s southern suburbs. One of the key targets of the strike was Hassan Nasrallah, Iranian and Israeli media reported.
The strikes were conducted shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the United Nations General Assembly, saying that Israel’s offensive against Hezbollah would persist, dampening hopes for a truce.
