ANKARA: An Iranian junior tennis player has withdrawn from a tournament final in Türkiye after refusing to compete against an Israeli opponent, in what has been widely described as a political protest move.

Hana Shabanpour was scheduled to take part in the final of the J60 junior tennis event when she opted to pull out of the decisive match.

The withdrawal came shortly before the contest was due to be played, effectively ending her participation in the tournament at the final stage.

According to Iran’s state-affiliated ISNA news agency, the decision was made deliberately as a form of protest against Israeli military actions in Palestine.

The report suggested that Shabanpour’s withdrawal was not due to injury or sporting reasons, but rather political objections linked to the ongoing regional conflict.

The development has once again highlighted how geopolitical tensions continue to spill over into international sporting arenas, particularly in competitions involving athletes from Iran and Israel, where such withdrawals and boycotts have been reported in previous events as well.

Tournament organisers have not yet issued a detailed statement regarding the withdrawal, and it remains unclear whether any disciplinary action will follow under the event’s regulations.

The incident is likely to draw further attention to the intersection of politics and sport, especially in junior-level international competitions where athletes are still in the early stages of their careers.
