TEHRAN: An Iranian soldier opened fire on fellow soldiers on Sunday, killing five of them in the southeastern city of Kerman, Iranian state TV reported.

The incident took place in the city where 94 people were killed in a bombing earlier this month.

According to the State TV the shooting occurred when the soldier arrived at a barracks and opened fire on the soldiers resting over there. It said the motive behind the killing was not immediately clear while there is no information about the suspect, who was at large.

The report said the attack took place in Kerman some 830 kilometers, southeast of Tehran.

Kerman saw two deadly explosions earlier this month that killed 94 people and injured hundreds of others during an anniversary ceremony for the death of an Iranian general killed in a 2020 US drone strike in Iraq. Daesh claimed responsibility of the attack.

Same type of shootings at military bases have been occasionally reported in Iran. In 2022, a soldier killed another soldier and three policemen at a police station in the country’s south. Military service of up to 24 months is mandatory for men aged 19 in Iran.
