TEHRAN: Iranian police have warned that women must wear mandatory headscarves (Hijabs) even in cars, local media reported on Monday.

Protests have gripped Iran since September 16 death of Iranian-Kurdish Amini, 22, after arrest in Iran for an alleged breach of Islamic republic’s strict dress code for women. Tehran generally calls the protests “riots.”

Removal of hijab observed

“The removal of hijab has been observed in your vehicle: It is necessary to respect norms of society and make sure this action is not repeated,” read a message reportedly sent by the Iranian police and posted on social media.

Morality police, known as Gasht-e Ershad, (Guidance Patrol) is mandated to enter public areas to check on implementing the strict dress code.

The protests, women in upmarket districts of the capital Tehran and more modest and traditional southern suburbs were observed without a headscarf and without being stopped.
