ZAHEDAN, Iran: An Iranian lawmaker has called for ‘retaliation’ against the Taliban rulers of Afghanistan in response to their failure to secure Iran’s water share from the Hilmand River.

Fadahossein Maleki, who represents the Zahedan people in Sistan and Baluchistan province bordering Afghanistan, warned that the Islamic Republic would have to put the possibility of retaliation on its agenda.

He emphasized that retaliation does not mean war with the Taliban, adding that Tehran should reassess its relations with them.

“We have different ways to deal with the Taliban.” We supply water and electricity to our neighbouring provinces in Afghanistan,” the Iranian lawmaker said.

He went on to say that the Islamic Republic of Iran has no choice but to devise some options against the Taliban.

The Taliban refuse to allow Iran’s share of water from Helmand to flow to Iran, causing a drought in Iran’s south-eastern province of Sistan and Baluchistan, which is located in a hot and dry region and receives little rainfall compared to other areas of the country.
