ISLAMABAD: Heading a high-level political delegation, Iranian Foreign Minister (FM) Hossein Amir-Abdollahian embarked on an official visit to Türkiye on Tuesday morning.
Prior to departure, while speaking to reporters Amir-Abdollahian said he would hold talks with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu. He mentioned that issues related to international, bilateral, and regional affairs would be the topics of discussion.
Turkiye visit by Iranian FM to make arrangements for Raisi trip
Elaborating on the visit’s purpose, the Iranian FM said that arrangements for Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s to Turkiye would also be made.
Amir-Abdollahian said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has officially invited Raisi to visit Ankara. The visit will be Raisi’s maiden visit to the Turkiye since taking office two years ago.
Raisi and Erdogan last met in Uzbekistan in September. At the time, Uzbekistan was holding the 22nd Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit. During their meeting on the summit’s sidelines, the two leaders reviewed agreements that were reached in July 2022, when Erdogan visited Iran’s capital Tehran.
Raisi’s visit is seen as a follow-up to the Turkish leader’s visit to Iran last year.
Amir-Abdollahian specifically mentioned that the latest developments in the South Caucasus region would be part of the talks along with other regional issues. These issues come under the Raisi government’s “neighborhood policy.”
Raisi was earlier scheduled to visit Russia alongside Turkiye, but the plan has been shelved for now.
