TEHRAN: Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has expressed strong condemnation over the assassination of Saleh al-Arouri, the deputy chief of Hamas, in Beirut by an Israeli drone.

In a statement, Amir-Abdollahian labelled the act as a “serious alarm” for regional countries, emphasizing that Israel’s actions in other nations pose a significant threat to peace and security in the region.

The Foreign Minister asserted that the killing of al-Arouri underscores Israel’s inability to achieve its goals despite weeks of what he described as “war crimes, genocide, and destruction in Gaza.” He extended condolences to Sheikh Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas political bureau, members of the liberation movement, and the Palestinian people.

The Israeli drone strike in Beirut targeted not only al-Arouri but also two commanders of Hamas’s military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades. This incident marks the most senior Hamas leader’s assassination since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict on October 7, during which Israel launched extensive air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip.

The Gaza conflict has resulted in a significant toll, with Gaza’s health authorities reporting at least 22,185 Palestinians killed and 57,035 injured. On the Israeli side, nearly 1,200 casualties are believed to have occurred in response to the Hamas attack on October 7.

The situation continues to escalate tensions in the region, raising concerns about the broader implications for security and stability.
