TEHRAN: In response to the European Union’s failure to lift sanctions on Iran, the Iranian government has taken retaliatory measures, including not submitting the Additional Bill to the Parliament, as outlined in the 2015 nuclear deal, Abolfazl Amoei, the spokesman of the National Security Commission of the Iranian Parliament said.
Amoei highlighted the United Nations Security Council’s (UNSC) recent official announcement of the end to restrictions imposed on Iran’s missile program. He noted that Iran had fulfilled its obligations under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) by reaching the eighth year of implementation, where restrictions on the missile program were supposed to be lifted in the framework of Resolution 2231.
However, the European Union, which was expected to remove certain individuals from its sanctions list and lift restrictions on Iran’s arms trade, failed to fulfill these commitments. This violation of the JCPOA led Iran to invoke its right under paragraph 26 of the agreement, allowing the country not to fulfill its obligations if the other parties breach the deal.
Iran Decides Not to Implement Obligations Under JCPOA
Due to Europe’s non-compliance, Iran chose not to submit the bill for Iran’s membership in the Additional Protocol to the parliament, as required by its JCPOA commitments. Additionally, the Iranian government refrained from implementing further obligations related to the missile program.
The international arms embargo against Iran was lifted in 2020, and now, with missile-related sanctions also lifted, Iran expected the European Union to honor its obligations. However, Europe’s failure to do so led to these retaliatory measures, emphasizing Iran’s commitment to its national interests and its willingness to respond to violations of the JCPOA.
