DUBAI: Iran has urgently called for convening an emergency meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to address the intensifying conflict between Hamas and Israeli forces, following a weekend assault on Israel, announced the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Monday.

Nasser Kanaani, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, stated, “Tehran has requested an immediate gathering of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to deliberate on the unfolding regional developments.”

Iran vehemently denied any involvement in the recent attacks that resulted in the loss of lives of 700 Israelis and the abduction of dozens more by the Hamas group. The casualties on the Palestinian side numbered over 400.

In response to inquiries, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that there was no substantiated evidence implicating Iran in the latest assaults on Israel. However, Blinken acknowledged the enduring ties between Tehran and Hamas.

Kanaani emphasized, “Anyone posing a threat to the Islamic Republic of Iran should be aware that any ill-advised action will be met with a formidable response.”

Iran’s support for Palestinian groups forms a crucial component of its wider network of backed militias and armed factions across the Middle East. This support grants Tehran a substantial influence in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, as well as Gaza.

The Hamas incursion, one of the largest into Israel in decades, coincides with efforts, supported by the United States, to encourage Saudi Arabia to normalize relations with Israel in exchange for a defense agreement between Washington and Riyadh.
