ISLAMABAD/DUBAI: Iran said on Thursday that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)’s latest position on Iran’s nuclear work was incorrect, according to the Mizan news agency.

The United Nations (UN) nuclear watchdog criticised Iran on Wednesday for making undeclared changes to the interconnection between the two clusters of machines enriching uranium to up to 60 per cent purity, almost close to arms grade, at its Fordow plant.

Tehran’s nuclear chief Mohammad Eslami said that “the IAEA inspector’s interpretation is incorrect, and he has reported it to the agency. he said that they provided the explanation to the IAEA on the same day,” he said.

IAEA’s stance on nuclear work

In the confidential report to member states, the nuclear watchdog did not say how the interconnection between the two cascades of IR-6 centrifuges were changed except that “they have interconnected in a way was substantially different from the mode of operations declared by Iran.”

Fordow is sensitive that the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and the central powers banned enrichment there. Since the United States (US) pulled out of the agreement in 2018 and re-imposed restrictions against Iran, the Islamic Republic has breached several of the deal’s restrictions on its nuclear activities.

Negotiations between Tehran and international powers to revive the pact have stalled since September.
