Iran, Russia, Turkey, and UN Discuss Syria Situation at UN General Assembly

NEW YORK: Iran’s Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, revealed discussions on the evolving situation in Syria during meetings with his Russian and Turkish counterparts and the UN Special Envoy for Syria in New York.

On the sidelines of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian engaged in crucial discussions regarding the latest developments in Syria. The meetings, held within the framework of the Astana process initiated in 2017 by Iran, Russia, and Turkey, addressed various aspects of the Syrian crisis.

Amir-Abdollahian elaborated on his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, and UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir O. Pedersen, emphasizing the economic challenges, Western sanctions, and the ongoing issue of terrorism as fundamental challenges facing Syria.

The participants expressed concerns over the humanitarian situation in Syria and reiterated the urgent need to fully lift unilateral sanctions against the country. These sanctions were noted as violations of international and humanitarian law, as well as the UN Charter.

Furthermore, the meeting emphasized the collective responsibility of the international community in alleviating the suffering of the Syrian people. It called upon the UN to formulate a comprehensive plan and provide financial support for the creation of essential infrastructure, facilitating the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland.

Amir-Abdollahian highlighted that the discussions also included proposals to reduce misunderstandings and address border disputes between Syria and Turkey, fostering stability in the region.

The gathering witnessed the Turkish and Russian foreign ministers, along with the UN envoy, expressing their views on assisting in resolving the multifaceted challenges facing Syria. This diplomatic engagement underscores the ongoing efforts by key stakeholders to find constructive solutions and improve the humanitarian situation in Syria.
