ISLAMABAD:  According to the office IRNA news agency, Iran on Tuesday revealed its first underground air force base, where fighter jets can be housed and is named “Eagle 44”.

The IRNA report did not disclose the base’s location, however, it said Eagle 44 was capable of both operating and storing drones along with fighter jets.

The news agency disclosed that the base was deep underground and the fighter jets housed there were equipped with long-range cruise missiles. The features make it one of the most important air force bases in Iran.

In May last year, the Iranian army disclosed details regarding another underground base at which drones are stored.

By building such facilities, Iran aims to protect its military assets from potential Israeli air strikes.

Speaking to Iran’s state TV, Mohammad Bagheri, the Iranian armed forces’ Chief of Staff,  said that a response will be made from the country’s numerous air bases, including Eagle 44 in case of an attack.
