ISLAMABAD/DUBAI: Iran’s military forces on Friday kicked off the annual drill in the coastal place of the Gulf of Oman and near the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz is located at the mouth of the Arabian Gulf and is crucial to international energy supplies, with the fifth of all oil traded at the sea passing through it.

A TV report said commandos and airborne infantry would participate in the wargames, dubbed “Zolfaghar-1401,” along the drones, helicopters, fighter planes, military transport aircraft and submarines. Iran’s armed forces are to fire missiles and air defence systems.

The maneuvers have aimed at “improving readiness in confronting foreign threats and any possible invasion,”.

Iran regularly holds drills to improve its military power and test weapons.

Mid-September, Iran was shaken by the anti-govt protests. They were ignited by death of a woman the country’s morality police had detained. The demonstrations have rapidly escalated into calls to end more than four decades of the country’s clerical rule.
