ISLAMABAD: Iran’s ambassador Reza Amiri-Moghaddam on Wednesday vowed to focus on expanding bilateral cooperation with Pakistan in the sectors of trade, countering transnational terrorism and narcotics control for mutually beneficial relations.
In his maiden public appearance, the Iranian diplomat delivered a candid speech at the dialogue “Iran-Pakistan Relations in the New Era”, arranged by the Institute for Policy Research (IPRI).
The ambassador extended his gratitude to the IPRI for convening an important dialogue on a key topic which was coincided with the changing developments in the region and also between the two countries.
Underlining the importance of the joint frontiers of the two countries, the envoy said that he accepted his assignment in these circumstances after thoroughly reading and understanding the challenges and opportunities. The government of Iran during President Raisi’s tenure prioritized close cooperation with the neighbouring states. Pakistan has been special for Iran as its neighbouring country.
Iranian Envoy Discusses World System
He said that the global system is changing at the moment as the unipolar world order is coming to an end and new great powers are emerging, making the shift from the West to the East. The Western power is decreasing, and Eastern powers are emerging. The future world would not be unipolar but rather would have multiple forces.
The envoy added that multinational platforms like the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and BRICS were new powerhouses emerging in the eastern world. In the future, contrary to the myth of military dominance, the economy, culture, and technological power will play a main role in contributing to the Eastern power rise.
The ambassador said that the bilateral trade volume between Pakistan and Iran had not increased despite multiple efforts, whereas the perpetration of terrorism by transregional players in the area was intended to bring uncertainty and dependence on them.
