TEHRAN: Iran has started uranium enrichment up to 60 percent purity at its underground Fordow nuclear site, Iranian state media reported Tuesday.

The action is taken on the demand of the UN nuclear watchdog in the context of enhanced cooperation from Tehran on the Nuclear Issue.

Iran has already been involved in the enriching of uranium up to 60 percent purity which is clearly under the roughly required 90 percent uranium for atomic weapons production, but it is higher than the 20 percent uranium enrichment Iran produced before a 2015 agreement with major world powers to control enrichment at 3.67 percent international level.

In a letter written to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a UN nuclear watchdog, Iran stated that it is doing uranium enrichment up to 60 percent purity at the Fordow nuclear site. It was an active response to the demands of the agency’s latest resolution, the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA) reported.

International Atomic Energy Agency Concerns

The 35-nation Board of Governors of IAEA on Thursday passed a resolution which is compelling Iran to cooperate immediately with the agency’s investigation for the traces of uranium discovered at three undeclared nuclear sites, diplomats at the closed-door vote said in a statement.

Iran’s Student News Network (SNN) said that Iran might be involved in constructing the new sets of centrifuges at its Fordow and Natanz nuclear sites.

According to Reuters, In June, Tehran was quickly escalating its uranium enrichment specifically for the preparation of the usage of advanced IR-6 centrifuges at the Fordow underground nuclear site, which can easily transit between different enrichment ratios.

This recent IAEA resolution is the second this year selecting Iran for the investigations and concerns, which have become the hurdle in negotiations on the renewal of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, as Iran has demanded the probe of IAEA be ended.

On Monday, Iran’s foreign ministry denied the IAEA resolution’s acceptance and referred to it as “politically motivated.”
