TEHRAN: An emergency meeting of the Iranian Parliamentary National Security Committee has been called to discuss the recent assassination of IRGC Commander in Syria, Arab media reported on Tuesday.

The Iranian government has termed the act a terrorist crime committed by Israel.

Earlier Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi while extending his condolences over the killing of Brigadier General Seyyed Razi Mousavi, said that Tel Aviv will definitely pay for this crime.

According to reports Mousavi was a senior member of the IRGC, who was in charge of logistics support for the Resistance Front in Syria. He was killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Zeinabiyah district of Damascus on Monday.

Iranian Defense Ministry Spokesman Brigadier General Reza Talaei-Nik condemning the assassination said that it indicates the terrorist character of the Israeli regime and a flagrant violation of Syria’s sovereignty and that Iran will wisely and powerfully respond to the killing.

Since Syria’s civil war started in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of air strikes on its northern neighbor, primarily targeting Hezbollah fighters as well as Syrian army positions.

On December 2, the IRGC said Israel had killed two of its members in Syria, where the force said they had been on an advisory mission, without giving further details.

Israel has increased attacks against Hezbollah since the start of its war with Hamas in Gaza- on October 7.
