KERMAN, Iran: Iranian authorities have successfully arrested a group of armed drug smugglers who entered the country from Afghanistan.

The operation, identified through a military effort, resulted in the apprehension of the individuals involved in illicit activities. The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported on the significant haul, which also included the confiscation of weapons.

During the operation, law enforcement agencies discovered a property near Kerman that served as a storage facility for both drugs and weapons.

The seized narcotics included 461 kilograms of opium, 106 kilograms of cannabis, and 57 kilograms of Shesha. Alongside the drugs, security forces seized an arsenal of weapons, highlighting the involvement of the smugglers in illicit and potentially violent activities.

The weaponry confiscated during the operation comprised a 14.5mm cannon, a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG), two RPG rockets, and 936 shells.

The coordinated efforts of Iranian authorities led to a successful intervention against the drug trafficking network, addressing both the narcotics trade and the potential security threats posed by armed smugglers.

The strategic location of Iran, sharing a border with Afghanistan, a major global producer of opium, has made the country a key battleground in the fight against drug trafficking. Iranian law enforcement agencies have been actively involved in countering the flow of narcotics across the border.

The recent operation underscores the ongoing challenges posed by cross-border drug trafficking and the need for collaborative efforts to combat organized crime in the region. The interdiction success not only disrupts the illegal drug trade but also prevents potential violence associated with armed smugglers.
