MOSCOW: The foreign ministers of Iran and Russia have signed a joint statement declaring their commitment to jointly counter the repercussions of unilateral coercive measures, specifically addressing the issue of sanctions.

The agreement was formalized during the visit of Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, to Moscow on Tuesday, where he participated in the annual meeting of foreign ministers from the Caspian Sea littoral states.

The joint statement, titled “Declaration of the Russian Federation and the Islamic Republic of Iran on ways and means of countering, softening, and compensation of negative consequences of unilateral coercion measures,” was signed by Minister Amir-Abdollahian and his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov.

Iran and Russian Aim to Counter “Illegal Sanctions”

Speaking about the declaration, Lavrov emphasized its importance in overcoming what he referred to as “illegal sanctions” imposed by the United States and its allies, positioning the agreement as a diplomatic alternative.

“We have just signed a declaration on ways and means to counteract, mitigate and compensate for the negative consequences of unilateral coercive measures,” Lavrov stated, as reported by Press TV citing TASS.

The joint effort reflects a strategic alliance between Iran and Russia to address the economic challenges posed by Western sanctions. Both countries have been subject to various forms of sanctions, and their collaboration aims to mitigate the adverse effects on their respective economies.

This agreement follows the participation of the two foreign ministers in a regular forum of Caspian Sea littoral states alongside their counterparts from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan.

Minister Amir-Abdollahian, leading the Iranian delegation, had previously announced bilateral meetings with several counterparts, including Lavrov, during the Caspian Sea littoral states’ gathering.
