TEHRAN: Iran’s Foreign Ministry reiterated on Monday that nuclear weapons have no place in the country’s nuclear doctrine, emphasizing that Iran’s nuclear program is solely intended for peaceful purposes. The statement comes in response to recent remarks by a Revolutionary Guards commander warning of a potential shift in Iran’s nuclear policy in the face of Israeli threats.

During a press conference in Tehran, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to a peaceful nuclear program, stating, “Iran has repeatedly stated that its nuclear program is exclusively for peaceful purposes. Nuclear weapons are not part of our nuclear doctrine.”

The comments follow remarks made by Ahmad Haghtalab, a commander responsible for nuclear security within the Revolutionary Guards, who warned last week that Iranian nuclear policy could be reconsidered if Tehran faced increased pressure from Israeli threats. Haghtalab’s remarks underscored the heightened tensions between Iran and Israel.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, holds the ultimate authority over Iran’s nuclear program and has previously issued a religious decree, prohibiting the development and use of nuclear weapons. Khamenei’s decree, issued in the early 2000s, emphasizes Iran’s commitment to maintaining a peaceful nuclear posture and rejects the pursuit of nuclear weapons.
