TEHRAN: Iran’s government on Thursday accused the United States (US) of orchestrating its removal from a United Nations (UN) women’s rights forum over its response to protest demonstrations triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini in the country.
US-Iran ties
Iran has seen waves of protest demonstrations since the September 16 death in custody of Amini. Iran claimed the resolution was an outcome of the US’s concerted efforts and attempts and lacked legal justification.
Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanani said it is one side action of the United States (US) and is an attempt to impose unilateral political demand and ignore the electoral process in international forums.

He said that removing a member of the UN’s body is a political act that discredits the organization and creates a unilateral process for future abuses of international forums. Iran was elected to the UN’s body for a four-year term in April.
A simple majority was required to adopt the resolution, which was adopted following 29 members of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) voted in support, 8 members including China and Russia voted against it while 16 abstained.
