PRETORIA, South Africa: South African authorities have launched an investigation into the tragic murder of three monks from Egypt’s Coptic Orthodox faith, with the motive behind the fatal stabbings still unclear.

The incident occurred at a church in Cullinan, located approximately 50 kilometers northeast of Pretoria, where the monks were found murdered on Tuesday, according to the South African Police Service (SAPS).

While the SAPS did not confirm the nationality of the victims, the Egyptian ambassador to South Africa visited the monastery to “follow up on the situation,” as reported by the church.

The Coptic Orthodox Church of South Africa expressed profound sorrow over the tragic incident and extended condolences to the families of the deceased monks, identified as Hegumen Takla El-Samuely, Yostos Ava Markos, and Mina Ava Markos.

The surviving victim recounted being attacked with an iron rod before seeking refuge in one of the rooms, while the suspects fled the scene without taking any valuable items or properties.

South Africa, grappling with one of the world’s highest crime rates, has witnessed a spate of criminal incidents targeting places of worship in recent months, with several occurrences documented on social media platforms.

According to police statistics released this month, the nation recorded nearly 84 murders per day between October and December, highlighting the pressing need for enhanced security measures and crime prevention strategies.

The Coptic community in South Africa comprises approximately 4,500 families, according to the church’s website, underscoring the significance of addressing security concerns and ensuring the safety of religious minorities in the country.

As authorities continue their investigation into the tragic killings, there are calls for swift action to apprehend the perpetrators and prevent further violence against religious communities, reaffirming the importance of upholding peace, harmony, and tolerance in society.
