UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking to express its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the aims of a world society free of drug abuse.
Supported by communities, individuals and various organizations worldwide, this global observance is aimed at raising awareness of the significant problem and threats illicit drugs offer to society.
This year’s theme is “People First: stop stigma and Discrimination, strengthen Prevention.”
The United Nations (UN) Office on Drug And Crime aims to raise awareness about the significance of respecting and empathizing with drug users, offering alternatives to punishment, and prioritizing prevention.
The international drug issue is a complex problem affecting millions worldwide. Severa, people who use drugs face stigma and discrimination, which can further harm their mental and physical health and prevent them from accessing the help they need.
