ISLAMABAD: International Day for the Abolition of Slavery is commemorated today (Saturday), with this year’s theme focusing on ‘Fighting slavery’s legacy of racism through transformative education.’

This day is highly significant worldwide since it is devoted to ending modern forms of slavery, such as forced marriage, child labor, sexual exploitation, human trafficking, and the forced recruitment of minors for armed combat.

Annually observed on December 2, the day serves as a solemn reflection on the dark history of slavery and the persistent impact of its legacy. Its origins trace back to the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others on December 2, 1949.

More than a historical marker, this day acts as a poignant reminder of the ongoing fight against slavery in all its forms, emphasizing the need for transformative education to combat the deep-seated roots of racism and inequality. As we observe this day, we renew our commitment to building a world free from exploitation and injustice. —APP
