ISLAMABAD: Ex-chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Aftab Sultan said on Tuesday that interference of other institutions in the NAB affairs was intolerable to him.

Sultan stepped down as the chairman of the anti-graft watchdog earlier today (Tuesday), citing personal reasons.

Addressing NAB officials in his farewell speech, Sultan said, “I was being asked to jail those who owned a single plot, while those possessing billions roamed freely.”

Without naming anyone, Sultan said “they asked [NAB] to frame cases against others, but have tens of billions of their own placed abroad.”

Sultan said he headed NAB in accordance with the constitution and law. “I did not bring anything with me, neither am I taking something home,” he said.

He said NAB is an upright institution with 99 percent of its employees working honestly but only one percent of them involved in malpractices. He urged the NAB officials not to obey those one percent.

Aftab Sultan’s advice for officials

Aftab Sultan urged the officials of the accountability body to only obey the constitution and perform their duties without having been influenced and tolerating anyone’s interference.

Sultan also asked to hold elections in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa as per the constitution.

Sultan, who belonged to the Police Service of Pakistan, was appointed the head of the anti-graft watchdog on July 21, 2022 by the coalition government of Pakistan Democratic Movement.
