CALIFORNIA: Meta Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mark Zuckerberg has said that the company’s newly-launched Threads app aims to outrival Twitter.
Experts say Meta Threads could attract Twitter users unhappy with recent changes to the social media platform.
Threads, which is not launching in the European Union (EU) for now due to regulatory concerns – allows users to post up to five hundred characters and has multiple features similar to Twitter, according to BBC.
App passes 5 million sign-ups
Zuckerberg said that the app passed 5 million sign-ups in its first four hours.
To a query on whether the app will be bigger than Twitter, the Meta chief said that it will take some time, but he thinks there should be a public conversations app with one billion plus people on it.
Competitors have criticised the data amount the new app might use. This may include health, financial, and browsing data linked to the identities of users.
Threads is now available in more than 100 countries, including the United Kingdom.
Meta said that the new app is an initial version and extra features would be added later that includes the ability to interact with people on other social media platforms like Mastodon.
