ISLAMABAD: The Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances (CoIED) disposed of 70 cases of missing persons and registered 15 new complaints in July, following the appointment of Justice (retd) Syed Arshad Hussain Shah as chairman.
The commission has disposed of a total of 8,770 cases of missing persons out of 10,607 till July 31.
The federal government recently reconstituted CoIED, and since assuming office, Justice (retd) Shah has taken several key steps to address the issue of enforced disappearances.
According to an official report, Justice Shah presided over two meetings of the committee responsible for submitting recommendations to the federal government regarding financial assistance in disappearance cases.
The commission stressed the need for the formulation of a uniform policy for investigation and the speedy disposal of cases of disappearances. The commission chairman had made visits to Lahore and Karachi to formulate regulations for the redressal of disappearances. He heard more than 50 cases during said visits.
Chairman Justice (R) Syed Arshad Hussain Shah also held a meeting with home secretaries and IGs of Police of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, and Sindh.
The chairman had stressed the timely submission of comprehensive reports of joint investigation teams and provincial task forces of all provinces, Islamabad, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
