ISLAMABAD/SYDNEY: Australia opening batsman David Warner would return home from India after his elbow fracture and concussion, Cricket Australia said on Tuesday.
It is the second wounded blow in two days for struggling Australia, who are 2-0 down in the four-Test series.
According to the AFP, fast bowler Josh Hazlewood went home on Monday after failing to recover from an Achilles tendon wounds.
Warner was hit on the helmet shortly after being struck on the elbow on the opening day of the second Test in Delhi. Matt Renshaw replaced him as substitute.
India tour as Australia faces defeat
Warner, who scored just 26 runs for the defeated Australia that lost both opening two matches, would miss the third and fourth Tests at Indore and Ahmedabad. It is hoped he could return for the subsequent one-day series.
Cricket Australia said, “Warner David has been ruled out of the Test tour of India and will return home.”
“After further assessment, he would require a period of rehabilitation which would preclude any further involvement in the remainder of the Test series. It is currently anticipated that he would return to India for the three one-day internationals which follow the Test series,” the statement said.
Australia captain Pat Cummins has already flown home because of a family illness but was expected to return for the third Test, which starts on March 1.
