LILLE, France: A baby died when an overcrowded migrant boat, en route to Britain, sank in the Channel off the coast of France.
French authorities reported that 65 individuals were rescued, but the infant was found unconscious in the water and declared dead. The sinking occurred near the town of Wissant, adding to the 52 migrant deaths in the Channel this year—a record since 2018 according to AFP.
Despite hazardous conditions, including strong tidal currents during the “grandes marées” (spring tides), migrants continue to risk the perilous crossing. This latest incident follows other recent rescues, with over 130 people saved by French vessels earlier in the week.

The tragedy coincides with intensified political debate on migration across Europe. French Prime Minister Michel Barnier is set to meet Italian ministers to discuss a controversial deal with Albania regarding migrant camps. The dangers of overcrowded boats continue to claim lives, with children being especially vulnerable.
Channel crossings have surged in recent years, with over 26,000 migrants landing on British shores since January 1, 2024, underscoring the ongoing crisis.
