ISLAMABAD: Indus River has been successfully diverted at the project site of Dasu Hydro Power Project in Kohistan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), a WAPDA spokesperson said on Sunday.

Dasu Dam water tunnel has been successful operative after a technical test went through positively. The electricity generation can start after phase-I in three years from now during 2026, sources said.
“The work on building of structure has been commissioned on temporary dam after redirecting of the river,” Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) stated. “The work on the major part of dam of hydro power project will start after completing the temporary dam part,” added the Wapda spokesperson.
Second tunnel on Indus River
According to the spokesperson, WAPDA has conveyed that the second tunnel under construction for diversion will be ended by mid-April 2023. “During the high flow period, the Indus River water will pass through both diversion tunnels.”

WAPDA spokesperson said that Dasu Hydro Power Project with 4,320-megawatt power generation capacity is likely to be completed in two phases.
The power generation from the first stage is targeted to start by 2026.
Due to Land acquisition issues, Covid pandemic, and other factors, the expected completion of Dasu Stage-I Hydropower Project has been postponed till FY 2026-27, WAPDA had said earlier.
