Indonesian Foreign Ministry Says Afghan Taliban Representatives Visited ‘Informally’

JAKARTA: Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that representatives of Afghanistan’s interim government visited Indonesia earlier this month on an unofficial trip.

The Afghan Taliban which took back power in August 2021 in Afghanistan is making efforts to shore up recognition of its rule across the Muslim world, including Indonesia to enhance economic and political ties.

Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Teuku Faizasyah told the media, “My understanding is that they were in Indonesia informally for domestic matters with the Afghanistan mission,”.

However, AFP reported that the Afghan deputy foreign ministry spokesperson Hafiz Zia Ahmad earlier tweeted that one of the government’s top diplomats led a “delegation” to Indonesia. The spokesperson further wrote, “The Afghan Taliban delegation also held useful discussions with some politicians, scholars, and businessmen in Indonesia for enhancing bilateral economic and political relations,”.

Teuku Faizasyah told AFP that there were no official interactions between Indonesian and Afghan government officials.

The Afghan deputy foreign ministry spokesperson, in his tweet, also said that Afghan representatives also met with diplomats from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Singapore while in Jakarta.

The Afghan Taliban government is not officially recognized by any country, and only a few countries have a presence in Afghanistan.
