Jakarta, Indonesia: Indonesia’s football federation (PSSI) announced on Wednesday they were backing Saudi Arabia’s bid to host the 2034 World Cup, a week after PSSI president Erick Thohir said that they were in talks with Australia regarding a possible joint bid for the event.
“In support of Saudi Arabia’s bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, Indonesia reaffirms its commitment,” stated Thohir in an official release. “Indonesia remains staunch in its preparations to bid for hosting FIFA World Cup events post-2034, along with other FIFA competitions.”
FIFA has called for bids from Asia and Oceania for the 2034 tournament, with a deadline of Oct. 31. Thohir said in the previous week he had held talks with his Australian counterpart about a possible bid that could also have included Malaysia and Singapore.
