ISLAMABAD: India’s main opposition party, the Congress, has questioned the government’s silence on the escalating conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel, calling for a clear narrative on New Delhi’s diplomatic position.

Senior Congress leaders said the government’s lack of public response to recent military confrontation and rising tensions in the Middle East was “concerning.”

According to Jairam Ramesh, Indian National Congress General Secretary, the current government’s position on the Iran conflict lacked clarity.

“The government’s silence is deeply concerning at a time when the region is on the brink,” he said, adding that “India’s voice has traditionally stood for dialogue, restraint and balance, especially on issues relating to Palestine and Iran.”

He further warned that any perceived tilt towards the United States and Israel would mark a departure from India’s established foreign policy approach.

The party urged the government to clarify whether it supports de-escalation efforts or aligns with recent military actions, warning that ambiguity could undermine India’s credibility on the global stage.

Congress leaders also pointed to India’s long-standing ties with Iran and its dependence on the region for energy supplies, saying a balanced and transparent policy was essential.

The criticism comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf, where threats to energy infrastructure and shipping routes have raised concerns globally.

The situation has prompted diplomatic engagement by several countries seeking to prevent further escalation.

Foreign policy analysts in India say the government may be exercising caution to avoid jeopardising its strategic relations with both Western allies and regional partners.

India has in recent years strengthened ties with the United States and Israel, while maintaining economic and historical links with Iran.

Observers say the issue reflects a broader debate within India over how to balance competing strategic interests in an increasingly polarised global environment.

As tensions continue, calls for a clearer policy direction are likely to grow, particularly given the potential impact of the conflict on energy security and regional stability.
